Advanced Query
Some of the search constraints can effect your query in a number of different ways. An Advanced Query makes use of the two Advanced bars to customize a complex query to more uncommon needs.
"Advanced Text" Bar
The Word Search and Originator Search options look the same.
Breaking down these options, we get:
- Looking for Any Word transforms your text search into Word1 OR Word2 OR Word3.
- Looking for All Words (default) searches for Word1 AND Word2 AND Word3.
- The Phrase search is looking for the literal string entered.
- The Anything Else search is a bit strange, and is good if you want to remove objects with something in common from an otherwise specific search.
"Advanced Time/Space" Bar
Your date range applies to your search results as follows:
The map view controls the coordinates of your search. The map view applies to your search as follows:
Despite the difference in labels, the above two menus are basically the same.
- Within the Query Range and Contains Item Area both generate results that are fully contained within the bounds of date or map coordinates specified.
- The Overlaps modifier makes this a fuzzier limitation, where only some part of the image or its time range needs to be contained.
- The Encompasses and Contained By refers to the object's date or area entirely containing the queried ranges. If you modified the Space constraint in this way, any objects returned would have the entire map as a piece.
- The final selection, Exclude/Outside is an inversion tool. It lets you highlight a period of time, or an area on the globe, that you do not need results from. This is useful when combined with a broad Text Search whose results are confounded by different regions with similar landmarks.
